Cameron Diaz pitched in for a 9/11 commemorative event with the Boston Celtics.
Diaz, and JR Giddens and Bill Walker of the Celtics, along with some 125 volunteers, planted flower beds around a Boston elementary school on September 11.
Volunteers built a basketball court, an outdoor classroom and a garden at the Young Achievers Science and Mathematics Pilot School in the Mattapan neighbourhood.
“She literally dug in and helped build some walled gardens at the school,” said Wyc Grousbeck of the Celtics. He had met Diaz in Las Vegas at the NBA All-Star Game in 2007.
He added: “She was hauling lumber, digging holes and hammering nails. She’s a really good person – not one of the phoneys.”
Diaz will start filming Wichita next week in Worcester with Tom Cruise. She brought along her assistants and personal trainer in a Prius to the event, which was sponsored by the Celtics, Harvard Pilgrim Health Care and City Year.
Diaz is a volunteer with a City Year-like organisation in Los Angeles, which is how she became involved.
