Julia, 41, played the role of the real-life environmental activist in the 2000 movie about Erin securing a multi-million deal from a US energy giant to provide compensation to those who were affected by contaminated water.

She went on to convince a lawyer to give her a job and then sued Pacific Gas and Electric Company for around £200 million.

Jodie Foster’s character of FBI agent Clarice Starling in The Silence Of The Lambs came second in the poll.

Other characters in the poll included Angelina Jolie’s character Lara Croft from Tomb Raider and Alien’s Ellen Ripley, who was played by Sigourney Weaver.
