Jenna Fischer, who plays a dowdy receptionist in The Office, said she loved being a secretary before she got her big acting break.

The 35-year-old, who stars in the US version, spoke about her time as an executive assistant.

“I actually liked the routine of going to an office every day, having a desk and making coffee,” the actress said. “And when I had a good boss, I liked anticipating his needs.

“Even when it came to making lunch reservation, I’d think: ‘How can I do this better than just calling up and saying: “Table for two?”

“‘I know, I’ll make friends with the maitre d’ and get the best seat in the place’.”

Two years ago, she broke her back in four places after falling down a flight of stairs. Unable to exercise, she comfort-ate and put on 10lbs.

Fischer said: “And to add insult to injury, I ended up throwing my own drink in my face.

“My hair was caked with a putrid pineapple smell. It was awful…

“Before the accident, I wore size 26 jeans. I was truly in the best shape of my life. Afterward, I gained 10lbs and got flabby.”

But Fischer ditched the excess weight by cutting back on junk food and by hiking with friends.

“I lost the first few pounds, which was a great motivator,” she says. “But I had to do more.”

Fischer eventually felt well enough to hit the gym.

A stalker whose victims included the widow of late Crocodile Hunter TV star Steve Irwin has been jailed for a year.

Alexander Duncan Davidson, 71, sent a letter to Terri Irwin, telling her to “get over” his death and threatening her daughter Bindi, 11. It also said he was “sick of seeing her” in the media.

Davidson, from Melbourne, Australia, left his address and phone number at the bottom of the letter.

When police asked him why he sent it, he replied: “I think she should get a life and move on.”

Melbourne Magistrates’ Court was told he was a “very unusual man” with little remorse. Davidson, who has four previous stalking convictions, admitted harassment.

Sharon Stone says she has not given up on finding true love.

The Basic Instinct star, 51, has three marriages behind her but says she still wants to emulate her parents’ relationship.

“They want to know if anyone here wants to marry me,” Stone said at the Hamptons Film Festival.

“And I wouldn’t say no to a partner.

“But my parents set a high standard to follow – they met at ages 14 and 15 when my dad was a school crossing guard and helped my mom cross the street.

“I just want that old-fashioned kinda love and I do think I’m going to get it.”

The famous singer is going to go on a tour of the United Kingdom soon, a place she has not been to on tour for about a decade now. Whitney Houston said the following about her upcoming tour: “This is my first full tour since the ‘My Love Is Your Love’ tour in 1999 and I am so excited to be performing for my fans around the world after all this time. I am putting together a great show and cannot wait to perform the songs from my new album ‘I Look to You’ along with some of your favorites.” This statement really sounds a lot like one of those old “Uncle Sam wants you!” recruiting posters. Well, Whitney Houston will probably get her wish in regards to the UK… people there are always hungry for another fresh American act every once in a while.

The singer recently admitted that during her teenage years she wasn’t the great looker she is today. Shakira said: “As a teenager I was plump but my appearance wasn’t so important at that time. I focused much more on my music and song writing. I know that image in this profession is a matter of opinion. I think the external appearance in show business is important and over the years I’ve discovered my assets. Honestly, I’ve never seen myself as a goddess or sex symbol.” Shakira shouldn’t worry about that one, I doubt too many other people have seen her like that either. Still, if her appearance didn’t matter so much as a teenager, how come she’s sharing it with us now? If it didn’t matter then, it is highly doubtful it is important now.

Australia’s deputy prime minister has tactfully avoided defending a live show skit that drew worldwide attention when it was branded racist.

The skit that had all of Sydney talking involved tar-faced minstrels taking off the Jackson Five on a reunion special for one of the nation’s longest running TV shows, Hey Hey It’s Saturday.

American and UK reaction to the skit, by a group of doctors calling themselves The Jackson Jive, was scathing, with Britain’s Guardian newspaper slamming it as “mind boggling” and Whoopi Goldberg joining the fray.

Approached on her daily press rounds, Australia’s 2IC, Julia Gillard, said: “I think Hey Hey It’s Saturday in its heyday was known for a sense of humour. Obviously I think whatever happened was meant to be humorous and would be taken in that spirit by most Australians.”

The show’s host, Daryl Somers apologised to his US guest judge on the show, Harry Connick Jr, who said the act would not be acceptable in his home country and gave it a zero. Somers said the flap was the result of the “cultural diversity” between Australia and the US.

Goldberg took Connick’s line on The View and said it would never be done in the US. She also tried to put the skit in context, saying, “they [the performers] don’t have any context with them”. She was referring to the history of American slavery and underdog minstrel musicians in the US. She continued: “They have it with the indigenous people.”

The Guardian, meanwhile, said of Somers’ apology: “Very good of him. In Australia, of course, it is perfectly acceptable and we thank the nation for yet another important contribution to the annals of human culture.”

Supermodel Christie Brinkley is anguished that her divorce battle is bouncing back into a New York court.

Brinkley divorced Peter Cook more than 18 months ago in a nasty battle that brought his infidelity onto the public radar.

Cook, an architect, is now alleging Brinkley is in contempt of court for failing to hand over a passport belonging to their son Jack, 14, in time for a class trip to Egypt last November.

The couple must now appear before a court. But her representative indicated this was the last thing Brinkley wants.

Amy Jacobs said: “She’s really upset and embarrassed that this is going back to court. She absolutely did not want to go to court. Peter is literally dragging her to court. She had chosen to look the other way for quite some time when he violated the confidentiality agreement by talking to Barbara Walters and other media outlets.”

Steven Kuhn, a lawyer for Cook, says he had no other recourse.

Peter Caronia, a lawyer for Brinkley, said his client’s timing was off. He said: “Ms Brinkley ran to her dearest friend’s side who had just lost her mother and made the passport available to Mr Cook a few hours after the agreed upon delivery time. Mr Cook refused to drive five to 10 minutes out of his way to pick the passport up from Ms Brinkley’s residence.”

Actress Kristin Davis is being spoiled rotten by her adoring Australian beau, photographer Russell James.

James has showered her with many gifts to make her feel special. A source said, “He has put a lot into making this work. He’s made Kristin a princess and she loves every minute.”

The pair first surfaced as an item when Davis flew all the way to Sydney for an opening of a James retrospective. He has been based in New York a long time and the two were soon seen out like an ordinary couple in Los Angeles.

The source added: “It’s been terribly passionate and romantic. He showers Kristin with gifts and love notes, like a teenage boy in love.”

Davis, a southern belle, has recently filmed the sequel Sex and the City movie with Sarah Jessica Parker. An insider said, “Sarah’s been teasing her that she’s being spoiled by Russell. It’s all in good fun and of course everyone is happy for her.”
