A Cate Blanchett play about the real-life murder of a Florida toddler has been condemned in the US.
The play, Tot Mum, directed by the risque Steven Soderbergh, who was responsible for Sex, Lies, And Videotape, is based on the life of two-year-old Caylee Anthony who was found mutilated with duct tape holding her body parts together last July.
The girl’s mother, Casey Anthony, 23, has been charged in her death and is awaiting trial for murder. She has pled not guilty and alleges the child’s babysitter is her killer.
Anthony’s attorney slammed the play, saying it was far too early to adapt the story for audiences. Jose Baez said: “If it’s based on reality and not fiction I think it’s extremely premature because this case is not close to its conclusion.”
A local television network, WBDO, was flooded with listeners reacting to the move and expressing outrage.
Blanchett’s Sydney Theatre Company has commissioned the play to open in Sydney in December and pledged to donate profits to the National Centre For Missing and Exploited Children. Blanchett is set to star in the production.
