Helen Mirren bumped into Helena Bonham Carter on the Oscars red carpet and joked they were a “couple of old queens”. The British actresses hijacked a red carpet interview on US television and used it as an opportunity for a catch-up. “The two queens,” Mirren declared as she said hello to the King’s Speech star. “A couple of old queens really, aren’t we, darling?” “Queens are us,” Bonham Carter replied with a laugh. “We should form a company.” As TV Guide interviewer Chris Harrison stood by silently, Mirren and Bonham Carter also gossiped about their Academy Awards fashion choices. “Are you wearing Vivienne Westwood?” Mirren asked. “I am. I took over the mantle.” “I nearly did VW,” Bonham Carter revealed. “This is a costume designer so I thought why not go costume designer. This is the film industry. There’s all sorts of things going on. It might fall off at any minute.” Bonham Carter, who played the Queen Mother in The King’s Speech, also joked she was effectively Mirren’s mother since she played Elizabeth II in The Queen. “She’s my daughter if you think about it. She played the Queen and I was the Queen Mother. Do you get it?” she said with a laugh.
