It seems that the singer is among those artists that have not yet forgotten the plight through which Haiti went a few months ago and has recently donated 400,000 dollars toward the rebuilding of a school. Moreover, Shakira’s donation will also be matched by the Inter-American Development Bank. This is what Shakira had to say about her donation to Haiti: “I’m convinced the key to achieve a dignified future for the Haitian people is through education. I’d like to say to the girls that this is an enormous opportunity that life is offering you – education. So make the most of it because I’m sure you can achieve any of your dreams.” Pretty big words being said here by Shakira… still, she does seem to have the wallet to go with them.
And she’s not too bad at it… after a recent commercial appearance, Shakira was apparently able to raise 660, 000 dollars for building schools in Columbia and Haiti. This is what the singer said about her endeavor: “Education is a birthright and a quality education is the only tool that a child has to turn dreams into reality. Since I was a girl I have been aware of the tough reality faced by many children.” It’s such a great thing that Shakira hasn’t forgotten where she came from… even though she probably could do a lot more. And yet… how about and extra six thousand dollars for those schools? Just for kicks…
Sharon Stone says her Basic Instinct co-star Michael Douglas will beat cancer. The actress spoke to 65-year-old Douglas after learning that he was undergoing treatment for throat cancer. “I was of course very concerned because he’s very dear and important to me,” Stone said “But I feel absolutely certain that he will beat this.” Stone, 52, spoke to US TV cameras at the Eagle and Badge Foundation’s Gala, where she was acting as master auctioneer to raise money for police officers and their families. She added that she would do anything she could to support Douglas through his cancer ordeal. “We have been friends a long time, and I’m very much in his corner,” she said. “I wanted to make sure that he was getting the best possible care, which he is, and that his prognosis was good, which it is.”

Shakira too will be joining in the fight to help the nation recover from its recent tragedies, but unlike all of the others recording singles for charity and organizing fundraiser shows, Shakira is going to be doing something solid, something concrete: she will build a new school in Haiti through her “Barefoot” foundation. This is what Shakira said about her intentions: “There is a great need for immediate aid in Haiti, but also for longer-term reconstruction. For that reason, we are doing our small part to help Haiti rebuild and give the children affected by this disaster the chance to learn and thrive. I hope we can use some of what we’ve learned working in Colombia to help Haiti’s children recover. When we educate children we empower societies, and right now Haiti needs all of our help.” Finally someone who’s actually stepping up to do something real! Hopefully more will take this opportunity to learn.
The singer recently admitted that she doesn’t really mind that her lyrics don’t make sense… sometimes. This is what Shakira shared with everyone on the matter: “It’s hard to explain my lyrics because sometimes I just write things because they rhyme. I found this metaphor, and I thought it made a lot of sense. A coffee machine in an office has everybody’s fingerprints on it. Sometimes I feel like that.” Well, Shakira should know that 7 year-olds sometimes write things just because they rhyme, that doesn’t really score her any points. And what is this deal with the coffee machine and the fingerprints… in relation to Shakira, especially her new video, that probably transmits and entirely different image than what she intends. But hey… it doesn’t really matter, does it? As long as the music sells…
The singer recently admitted that during her teenage years she wasn’t the great looker she is today. Shakira said: “As a teenager I was plump but my appearance wasn’t so important at that time. I focused much more on my music and song writing. I know that image in this profession is a matter of opinion. I think the external appearance in show business is important and over the years I’ve discovered my assets. Honestly, I’ve never seen myself as a goddess or sex symbol.” Shakira shouldn’t worry about that one, I doubt too many other people have seen her like that either. Still, if her appearance didn’t matter so much as a teenager, how come she’s sharing it with us now? If it didn’t matter then, it is highly doubtful it is important now.
